Book of Everything
“The first County Court of Winneshiek County was opened at the house of William Day of Decorah on the first Monday of September, 1851….”
These were the first legal records kept for the county. There was no courthouse so the proceedings were held in private residences. This book is called the Book of Everything because it literally includes all legal and civil actions in the county. Most of these matters would later have their own dockets.
This book covers the time period from September 1851 to March of 1861. It includes, but not limited to, First application of intent for citizenship and orders granting citizenship. Applications for marriage licenses. Establishment of Roads. Establishment of County Commissions, budgets and setting taxes. Legal disputes and all other matters related to county government.
